Where to Stay Near Goodwood: Why Kingsley House is the Perfect Base for Glorious Goodwood and the Festival of Speed

The question we get asked more than any other, by a considerable margin, is this: are you near Goodwood? The answer is yes. We are thirty minutes south of the estate by road, which puts Kingsley House at exactly the distance where staying here rather than driving back to London at the end of the day makes obvious sense.

We've lost count of the number of guests who have arrived on a Thursday, gone to the races or the Festival of Speed, come back to the house, eaten well and slept properly, and told us the following morning that they had never done a Goodwood trip quite like it. There's a version of Goodwood that involves fighting the M25 home at eleven o'clock at night, and a version that involves a proper base thirty minutes from the estate and a coffee at the door the next morning. They're not the same experience!

The Festival of Speed

The Festival of Speed takes place in late June or early July on the Goodwood estate grounds. It is, on paper, a motoring event. In practice it's something closer to a carnival of automotive history: historic racing cars, motorcycles, current Formula One machinery, record-breaking cars and the people who built and drove them, all within the grounds of one of the most beautiful estates in the south of England.

From Kingsley House, the drive to Goodwood takes under forty minutes heading south through the national park on the A286. We recommend leaving early. The roads around the estate fill quickly from mid-morning and an early start gets you in before the main crowd and gives you the paddock to yourself for the first hour.

Glorious Goodwood

Glorious Goodwood, the flat racing festival in late July and early August, is five days of some of the best horse racing in England on a course that sits high on the South Downs with views north across the Weald. The racing is serious, atmosphere is convivial and the fashion stakes are high. The setting, compared to almost any other racecourse in the country, is exceptional.

Several of our guests come specifically for the Sussex Stakes or Nassau Stakes days. Both are Group One races and both attract runners of the highest quality. If you're going for the racing rather than the social occasion, either of those days will reward the journey. If you want a bigger atmosphere, the Saturday draws the largest crowd and has the energy of a proper British sporting event.

We have guests who have stayed with us for Glorious Goodwood for three years in a row. The fact that they book before the previous stay is over tells us something about how the trip works when you have the right base. For 2027 we have one room left!

Cowdray Park Polo

A short drive further west from Goodwood, Cowdray Park Polo Club hosts the British Open Polo Championship across three weeks in late July. The polo is world-class, the ground is beautiful, admission to the public areas is free on most days and the ruins of Cowdray Castle visible from the main pitches are one of those pieces of English landscape that stop you mid-conversation.

We are equally good as a base for Cowdray as we are for Goodwood. Guests who want to do both in the same stay have done so comfortably, with Goodwood one afternoon and Cowdray the next morning.

Why Kinsgley House

Duncan brings freshly brewed Brazilian coffee to your door in the morning at the time you asked for followed by a delicious breakfast in the dining room. Craig cooks in the evenings if you want to eat in. The drawing room is good for the end of an evening when you want to sit and talk by the fire rather than go to bed immediately. The garden is good for a glass of something before dinner if the weather cooperates and if it doesn't you can arrange to have a film night in with a takeaway.
