What Is Rivals, and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

If you haven't yet discovered the bonkbusting brilliance of Jilly Cooper's Rivals, where have you been hiding? (Hopefully at Kingsley House, which we'd thoroughly approve of.) Rivals on Disney+ is the adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper's iconic 1988 novel — part of her beloved Rutshire Chronicles. It has become the most deliciously scandalous thing on television since, well, the first series.

Set in the rolling English countryside of the 1980s, it follows the combustible rivalry between the devastatingly handsome Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and the power-hungry, blackmail-happy Lord Tony Baddingham (the ever-magnificent David Tennant). They battle for control of a television franchise. There are shoulder pads, hairspray, and an extraordinary amount of what Dame Jilly herself once described as "bonking."

Season 2, which launched on Disney+ on 15th May 2026, picks up exactly where the chaos left off. Cameron (Nafessa Williams) is lying low after an unfortunate incident involving a television award and Tony Baddingham's head. Rupert is being Rupert. Lizzie (Katherine Parkinson) and Freddie (Danny Dyer) are pretending very badly that they don't fancy each other. Amid all the scheming, the drama, and the absolutely spectacular 1980s knitwear, a new character arrives in Rutshire — a character with possibly the finest dog name in television history.

Enter Muffy. And, More Importantly, David Bow-Wowie.

One of the exciting new faces in Rivals Season 2 is Eliot Salt, playing a freshly invented character called Muffy, whose full name is Caroline Hampshire. In a memorable early scene, Muffy's dog causes a bit of a scene — and the dog in question is introduced as David Bow-Wowie.

It's the kind of name that could only exist in the Jillyverse: completely absurd, absolutely perfect, and delivered with total straight-faced commitment. Eliot Salt herself is a rising star of British television. You might recognise her as Joanna from the BBC's Normal People or as Sarah Dunn in the third season of Slow Horses. She's also appeared in Sky comedy Intelligence alongside Nick Mohammed, played Terra Harvey in Fate: The Winx Saga, and popped up in Industry as Caedi McFarlane, former assistant to Kit Harington's delightfully awful Henry Muck. She's brilliant. Muffy is brilliant. And her dog, if we do say so ourselves, is exceptional.

Because David Bow-Wowie? That's our Hudson.

Hudson: The Star He Always Knew He Was

We'd like to say Hudson was humble about the whole thing. We'd like to say he took the fame in his stride, that he remained grounded, that he didn't immediately demand extra treats and a bigger bed.

We cannot say any of those things. From the moment Hudson trotted onto that set, it was clear he was made for the Jillyverse. He has the kind of effortless charisma that even Rupert Campbell-Black would begrudgingly respect. He hit his marks. He charmed the crew. He was, in the most technical sense possible, a very good boy.

Watching him onscreen in Jilly Cooper's Rivals — padding around in what is essentially the most glamorous universe on British television — is a genuinely surreal and completely wonderful experience. We may have watched his scene several times. For research purposes.

A Luxury Stay With a Celebrity Dog

Here at Kingsley House, our boutique bed-and-breakfast near Haslemere in Surrey, Hudson has always been part of the magic. He's greeted guests, commandeered sofas, and generally conducted himself as if he owns the place (which, emotionally speaking, he does).

And now, officially, he is a Disney+ star.

So if you're planning a stay at Kingsley House, whether you're a devoted Jilly Cooper fan, a Rivals obsessive, or simply someone in need of a gorgeous, relaxing escape in the Surrey hills, know that you may well be sharing your breakfast with an actor and a gentleman. A proper one. He's been on telly and everything. We think you'll find the quality of our four-legged host rather exceptional.

Can't Get Enough of Rivals? Come and Meet the Cast (Well, One of Them)

Rivals Season 2 is streaming now on Disney+, with the first three episodes available and more to follow later in the year. It's the perfect tribute to the late, great Dame Jilly Cooper, who adored every inch of this production and was involved in its creation right up until her death in October 2025, aged 88.

If the show has you dreaming of rolling countryside, grand houses, and extraordinary characters — we can help with at least some of that. Kingsley House offers luxury accommodation near Haslemere, Surrey, with beautiful surroundings, a warm welcome, and at least one bona fide television personality on the premises.
